IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Koji Kanemoto 14:25 of 31:38. Excellent back and forth match that appeared to be one of their very best. Kanemoto is really disciplined and under control here, not forcing anything or acting superhuman to pop the crowd. He's even able to stick with the more measured pace that works better for such a long match. Liger is slowed by a knee injury that occured before TV picked the match up, but is able to overpower Kanemoto with bombs and strikes. Kanemoto hits some hot counters, particularly when Liger is running the ropes, but does his best damage going back to the knee late for a near finish with the kneebar and two with the ankle lock. The main thing I didn't like was the decision to book a title rematch two months after their 1/4/99 Tokyo Dome match, as you kind of knew Kanemoto was going to take the title this time, and that somewhat lessened the sweetness of Kanemoto finally succeeding in defeating Liger in a title match on the 5th try. ****+

6/23/95 Niigata Shi Taiikukan Super Jr. II Leaguesen: Shinjiro Otani vs. Koji Kanemoto. This was a lot better than their J Crown match from 97. The match didn't tell any kind of a story, but it wasn't goofy with illogical no sell spots and the like. The work was excellent as you'd expect, with crisp execution and good stiffness for juniors. The selling, mainly how much they put over the previous damage (although considering how long this was they couldn't exactly spring right back up), and comebacks was a lot stronger than I expected. They went at it hard for 30 minutes (a little over 20 shown here) and still had a lot left, actually more in the worked sense than they should have. **** on Vol. 28, 7:54 shown here.

9/14/98 Sendai Miyagi-ken Sports Center: Shinjiro Otani vs. Koji Kanemoto. ***3/4 on Vol. 49, 10:54 shown here

10/23/97 Kumamoto Shi Taiikukan: Shinjiro Otani vs. Kendo Kashin. *** on Vol. 42, 5:31 shown here

Koji Kanemoto & Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Jushin Thunder Liger & Kendo Kashin & Dr. Wagner, Jr. Good match, but clearly toned down. More of the attitude and less of the sequences. 7:08 shown

5/28/94 Super Jr. Leaguesen: Shinjiro Otani vs. TAKA Michinoku. Seemed like Otani carried the match and TAKA supplied the flashy offense. Fans were very into TAKA's flying. He was so graceful. Otani focused on TAKA's right knee. Good early stuff from both. 4:33 shown

5/20/97 Tokyo Korakuen Hall Super Jr. Leagusen: Otani vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri. ***3/4 on Vol. 36, 5:12 shown here

4/13/99 Sendai Miyagi-ken Sports Center: Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Jushin Thunder Liger & The Great Sasuke. Excellent change of pace from the NJ's usual junior tags that the crowd was very into. Faster paced and more exciting because of Sasuke. Sasuke looked off right at the begining of what they showed, which hurt the match. I'm glad I saw this part because it gives me a much clearer indication of where the match probably was as a whole, but considering they were editing all these and cutting out excellent parts one has to wonder why they didn't start their clip 30 seconds later. 7:10 shown.

10/16/97 Yokkaichi Shi Taiikukan: Shinjiro Otani vs. El Samurai. *** on Vol. 42, 5:13 shown here.

5/19/98: Shinjiro Otani vs. El Samurai. Seemed like a very well worked match, but one that was just par for the course for these two. 4:45 shown

9/16/95 Tokyo Korakuen Hall: Shinjiro Otani vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa. Good submission oriented match. I figured they'd just drop them and go to the spots at some point, but they saw it through to the end. 5:03 shown

5/31/98 Super Jr. Leaguesen: Shinjiro Otani vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa. **** range on Vol. 46, 5:45 shown here.

6/6/94 Chiba Koen Taiikukan Super Jr. Leaguesen: Shinjiro Otani vs. Jushin Thunder Liger. Otani wasn't as smooth or precise here, but he was working intelligently and the match wasn't about spots, so it didn't much matter. Otani was in full young punk mode here using the guard rail and post to work over Liger's arm. Meanwhile, Liger focused on Otani's knee. The difference between this match and the 9/16/95 one with Takaiwa is here there was much more breaking down the part and much less applying submissions to it. 7:16 shown

11/14/95 Hamamatsu Arena: Shinjiro Otani vs. Jushin Thunder Liger. I enjoyed the highlights of their previous encounter more because this was basically the standard NJ junior style of the time, but there's no denying how much smoother, more polished, and more charismatic Otani was a year and a half later. 7:26 shown

3/24/99: Kensuke Sasaki & Shinjiro Otani vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima. Sasaki & Otani offered solid varied opposition to Tenzan & Kojima, who didn't have their standard have a good match with anyone formula down yet. What made this good is that NJ hadn't killed off the juniors credibility yet, so fans actually felt Otani could win. Otani lacked sustained offense against this big tough opposition, but he did the counters into pins that gave you hope, and the fans wanted to believe. ***

5/20/99 Tsukubo Cabio: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Super Shocker. Shocker uses moves that haven't been seen in Japan, but what really helped this match is they fit so well into Liger's formula. Shocker had an interesting knee attack, but lacked the diversity to sustain it for as long as he tried to. These two worked quite well together. The finishing segment lacked the excitement and drama to live up to the body of the match and make it a standout. ***1/2

5/21 Tokyo Korakuen Hall: Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Masaaki Mochizuki. Takaiwa tried to carry this. Mochizuki was bumping for him, but Takaiwa's offense was too basic for this to be all that good. These two didn't have much chemistry, and the execution was far from perfect. **

5/22: Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Gran Hamada. Got off to the expected slow start and wasn't going anywhere, but wound up having a few memorable spots. Takaiwa did his repeated powerbombs, but Hamada truned the 2nd into a Frankensteiner. Takaiwa caught Hamada's pescado and threw him into the guard rail. Takaiwa tried to turn Hamada's Frankensteiner off the top into a powerbomb,b ut Hamada switched into a DDT. **1/2

5/23 Nagano: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Masaaki Mochizuki. Shocker was better than Mochizuki, but Liger was better here and the psychology and focus were a few steps up. Liger shotei'd Mochizuki over the guard rail, but injured his arm shoteing the post when Mochizuki ducked out of the way. Mochizuki then went to work on the arm including exciting spots like swandive missile kick, kakato otoshi to keep at it after his main arm attack was over. ***1/2

5/29: Koji Kanemoto vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa. Kanemoto made this a fierce intense match. Takaiwa attacked Kanemoto's left knee including a diving elbow. Much more exciting than the previous Takaiwa, faster paced with more spots. 6:48 shown. Good.

6/3 Hiroshima Undo Koen Taiikukan: Koji Kanemoto vs. Gran Hamada. Kanemoto was on top of his game here. Hamada wasn't, but with Kanemoto's help most of the moves looked great anyway. Hamada did his diving swinging DDT off the apron. ***1/4

6/6: Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Super Shocker. Style clash. Takaiwa doesn't know Lucha, so he basically grounded Shocker. Shocker did his knee attack, but he had to fight like a Japanese heavyweight. Takaiwa didn't give him much respect either. Not a bad match, but Takaiwa's lack of diversity was a killer. **

NJ Tokon V Special Vol. 57 Best of The SUPER Jr. VI Part. 2 Commercial Tape 5/19-6/8/99
-1 1/2hr. Q=Master

5/20/99 Tsukubo Cabio: El Samurai vs. Masao Orihara. Great moves, but they didn't work them in that well so it was basically just an exhibition of spots. **3/4

5/21/99 Tokyo Korakuen Hall: Kendo Kashin vs. Minoru Tanaka. Tanaka is a great opponent for Kashin because not only is he the best at the same basic style, but he's one of the best at camouflaging mistakes. Strong technical match. Great fast counters and transitions out of armbars and snapmares. Tanaka even turned an Argentine backbreaker into a hadakajime. A match like this shows even more than usual that Kashin's brawling detracts from the match because it removes the credibility and seriousness from the "shooting." Not that this match looked particularly believable, of course, but it was a match where the smoothness, quickness, and athleticism shown in the matwork allowed you to suspend disbelief. ***1/4

5/22/99: Kendo Kashin vs. Masao Orihara. Kashin & Takaiwa are really exposed in this tournament because they keep having style clashes they can't get over, unlike the other NJ juniors that basically have a good match with anyone. Orihara got most of the offense and was out to make it entertaining. Suddenly he missed a moonsault and Kashin armbared him for the win. **

5/23/99 Nagano: El Samurai vs. Minoru Tanaka. Lots of good moves, but too short so there wasn't much developement. Nice back and forth though. More towards Samurai's style, but some submission work when Tanaka caught Samurai. Tanaka had a nice stretch of near finishes including a Dragon suplex, but the match just ended there rather than becoming more dramatic with Samurai getting his chance. ***

5/30/99: Kendo Kashin vs. Shinjiro Otani. Kashin jumped Otani as soon as Otani hit the ring, and beat him up on the outside. What I liked about the opening was Kashin used his brawling to attack Otani's arm, so it actually set up his in ring submission work. Otani kept his arm in focus and did a typically good job of working to Kashin's strengths and keeping the quality high. Kashin was a little sloppy, but mainly it had the same problems as a lot of these matches, too short and ends rather abruptly. Still a pretty smart match with better transitions than I expected from a Kashin match. ***1/4

6/3/99 Hiroshima Undo Koen Taiikukan: El Samurai vs. Shinjiro Otani 23:11 of 30:00. Long match with a major effort from both parties. Wasn't real exciting early, but had good focus with Otani working over Samurai's knee. Samurai didn't have Otani's focus, but he did some good arm spots. They built up to the high spots with this slower paced more selling oriented section that made the holds seem meaningful. The problem is once they went to the spots they pretty much rendered the early submission work meaningful. There's no doubt in my mind that both segments were excellent, but this should have been a great match and all it would have taken was to connect the segments instead of it being like two different matches. The second half had some great work. Once they started the near falls they pretty much kept doing them until the end. They weren't just going through every move in their arsenal, they only did 1-2 per minute. They made you sure the match was going to end right there, but then it kept continuing. ****1/4

6/6/99: Kendo Kashin vs. Dr. Wagner, Jr.. Another style clash. Wagner pretty much conceded this wasn't going to approach his usual quality and didn't take it too seriously. What they did looked fine, but it was a lackluster ending to the tape, especially after we just saw a top notch match. 5:05 shown

Gran Hamada & El Samurai & Kendo Ka Shin & Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa & Super Shocker & Masao Orihara & Masaaki Mochizuki. The timing and execution wasn't as good as the typical NJ Jr. tag, but overall I felt it was a better match because it was something different. The new people in the match, not so much Mochizuki, but Shocker, Orihara, & Hamada all performed well. In fact, Ka Shin & Takaiwa were probably the worst of the eight, which helps validate the theory that Liger, Samurai, Kanemoto, Otani, & Wagner could probably have better tag matches if the better independent juniors were in Ka Shin & Takaiwa's place. It was cool seeing Orihara & Wagner battle for who could be the biggest punk in the match. However, Shocker vs. Wagner produced better, probably the best, wrestling. This match wasn't that long, but they worked at such a fast pace, particularly Samurai, that they really packed a lot into it. ****

Genichiro Tenryu & Manabu Nakanishi vs. Tatsumi Fujinami & Meng. Pretty much everything you'd expect. Meng & Nakanishi did the expected no selling. Fujinami seemed out of place. Tenryu didn't even bother to try to resurrect this from the gutter. 1/2*

NJ Strong Style #103 11/5/99 G1 CLIMAX TAG LEAGUE 1st taped 9/23/99 Tokyo Nippon Budokan: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. AKIRA. Liger sustained a flukish knee injury midway through the match and had to hobble around on one leg the rest of the way. What made the match is that AKIRA viciously attacked the bad knee and took the fight to Liger so he really didn't need to have much mobility. Liger's selling is top notch when he's faking, so you can imagine how good it was here. The only problem was that with Liger being so limited, he wound up just putting AKIRA away with two moves after taking all that abuse from AKIRA. ***1/4

IWGP Junior Tag Title Match: Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. Koji Kanemoto & Minoru Tanaka 18:32. They came out with the look in their eyes, the desire to have a classic. The intensity and urgency were high from the get go, and never wavered. Kanemoto & Otani began by taking it to each other, doing a fast paced stiff match in Tanaka's shoot style. These two can move to a sort of UWF style with ease, I say sort of because it had the moves but desired to be a junior match rather than something credible, but Takaiwa lacks their diversity and ultimately was pretty much the same as always. Tanaka had no problem fitting in since they geared it toward his strengths, but Kanemoto & Otani were much better than the other two. It wasn't as well executed as the typical junior tag, but that was to be expected since they aren't as familiar with Tanaka. Not a spectacular bout in the traditional sense, but their passion had me riveted from start to finish. ****

6/12/90 Fukuoka Kokusai Center, Martial Arts Match: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Masashi Aoyagi R4. Liger does almost everything shockingly credibly, to the point he actually seems like the total package with the amateur wrestling, ground and pound and submissions to win, and all the kickboxing movement & feints to stay out of trouble. While the match is fairly one-sided, it's a great example of using a more legitimate setting to up the intense hatred pro wrestling often strives to attain. The fact that they manage not to lose the plot when it comes to credibility as they incorporate cheap shots, mask ripping, and a blade job is pretty amazing. An underrated classic of the genre, and a big win for Liger, defeating a legimiate karate master who also defeated Onita in their first match on 10/6/89. ****
