JWP THUNDER QUEEN BATTLE IN YOKOHAMA

The Queens Road Yokohama First Zen Nihon Junior Senshuken:
Numacchi (AJW) vs. Sumio Toyama

These two are more known for their "performance" style than for their wrestling. Toyama hadn't adopted her Saburo gimmick yet, but she was already being programmed against women with a comedic style in interpromotional matches (her other "big" interpromotional feud was against GAEA's Bomber Hikaru). There wasn't any clowning around in this match though, probably because the title was on the line.
These two were both below average at this point, so I didn't expect much. This meant I was pleasantly surprised because these two worked their ass off to deliver the best match they possibly could. It certainly wasn't great, but it was a solid match with a strong finish.

Both of these women had about the same basic move set. It wasn't as small as the rookies, but neither had much beyond their Russian leg sweep and nodowa otoshi. The match was built around those two spots. The rest of the match mainly consisted of submission holds. In that respect, the match was kind of dull because 15 minutes of submission holds to get to the hot final quarter is kind of a lot since these two aren't exactly giving Volk Han a run for his money. They did work their submissions though, so it wasn't like they were just laying around in a ChinRock doing nothing. Both Numacchi & Toyama did a good job of selling the submissions and making their crawls to the ropes somewhat dramatic.

The highlight of the match was Numacchi weathering a series of nodowa otoshis and finally turning one into a wakigatame. The fans were really into the match down the stretch, probably out of appreciation for the effort they realized they were getting more than anything else, even though the near falls were basic pinning predicaments such as the schoolboy. Eventually the time limit expired, so Numacchi retained her title.

Miko: My finger kept twitching toward the fast forward for this time limit draw. Toyama doesn't suck, but some of her moves are pretty weak. Numacchi was pretty bad though. If you love Russian leg sweeps, this is your match.;^) Chock full of arcane offense. They worked hard, but that was about it.

Jerome: I expected nothing good since Numacchi is a comedy wrestler, but she actually worked seriously in this match. It was still boring and dull when she was on offense because she has no moveset. Toyama came back with a lot of submissions, but she wasn't focused. She's a pretty solid wrestler, if unspectacular, and she managed to make the match interesting. Her submissions looked quite good, and the crowd popped for her wakigatame. Numacchi got to the ropes two times before getting up, and never sold the arm afterward. It would have been a really mediocre bout, but the last part of the match was a pretty good series of near falls back and forth, with both women doing the best they possibly could with their limited arsenal (they did a thousand Russian leg sweeps, but at least they did it well, unlike Bret Hart who seems lazy enough to never cross his opponent's leg). The end of the match was actually hot, and I really wished Toyama would have won. Pretty good match due to Toyama.
