HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

1/22/99 Osaka Furitsu Taiikukaikan Triple Crown:  Mitsuharu Misawa vs.  Toshiaki Kawada.  Kawada wins title despite breaking his wrist and forearm during the match. Read Review. ****

1/2/99 Tokyo Korakuen Hall: Heavykyu Battle Royal. Clip of Vader badly bloodying Kobashi above his right eye

1/7/99 Kochi-ken Min Taiikukan:  Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs.  Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama.  Kawada & Taue were pretty nasty here. I particularly liked the knee drop Kawada did to the area on Kobashi's head Vader had bloodied. Fans got into it when Akiyama made the hot tag. They probably should have shown this whole match. It was technically good throughout and became highly dramatic with so many nice near falls, but I never quite had the feel for the overall quality. That said, if I were to guess I'd say it was an excellent match. Kobashi & Akiyama win titles.

1/15/99 Yokohama Bunka Taiikukan:  Kenta Kobashi vs.Vader. Read Review. ****

1/15/99 Yokohama Bunka Taiikukan World Junior Heavyweight Title:  Yoshinari Ogawa vs. Masahito Kakihara. Read Review. ****1/2

1/16/99 Tokyo Korakuen Hall Asia Tag Titles:  Tamon Honda & Jun Izumida vs. Hayabusa & Jinsei Shinzaki. Some nice moves, but that was the be all and end all because only one team could give you anything good. It was a fun match when Hayabusa & Shinzaki were on offense, highlighted by an awesome swandive body press over the guard rail by Hayabusa. On the other hand, it was really boring when Honda & Izumida were on offense. Shinzaki did a sick blade job early on, but it pretty much only provided shock value. Hayabusa & Shinzaki deserve a lot of credit for making this worthwhile, but it was still over 23 minutes of things happening for little if any rhyme or reason. ***

AJ Pro Wrestling 5/30/93 '93 Super Power Series taped 5/21 Sapporo Nakajima Taiiku Center

Junior Heavykyu Senshukenjiai: Masa Fuchi vs. Danny Kroffat. Looked like a hot match, but only 2 ½ minutes shown. Kroffat wins title.

Toshiaki Kawada vs. Steve Williams. Brutal match. Looked excellent, but only 6 ½ minutes shown.

Triple Crown: Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Stan Hansen. Hansen wrestled smart, but is old and doesn't have great stamina. He used his brawling spots to injure Misawa's arm. Then, he was able to rest by doing submissions to the arm that weren't seen as resting because they advanced the match. The psychology and utilization of the spots were among the strong points, but Misawa should have won with the facelock. He used that move 5 times, all deep in the match where they could have been the finish.the fans here still reacted to it but it's no wonder how the move lost all it's heat.

UWF-I TV 6/1/93 taped 5/6 Tokyo Nippon Budokan

Kiyoshi Tamura. ¼ aired, so it seemed really good because they just showed the hot spots.

Super Vader vs. Tatsuo Nakano. Vader makes his UWF-I debut by obliterating Nakano in 3:35. This match did a great job of getting Vader over as a monster. Good for what it was.

Gary Albright vs. Dennis Koslowski. Another short match that was not supposed to be great, but served it's purpose of getting Albright and his killer suplexes over more.

Nobuhiko Takada vs. Dan Severn. Decent match in spite of Severn.

AJ Pro Wrestling 30 6/20/99

6/11 Tokyo Nippon Budokan Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs. Takao Omori & Yoshihiro Takayama. Kawada brought his A game and did a great job of carrying Takayama. Taue even did a good job with Takayama. The fans were going nuts so the match seemed even better than it was. It looked like it could be excellent, but in unedited form, very good might be a stretch.

6/9 Sendai Miyagi-ken Sports Center Sekai Tag Senshukenjiai: Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama vs. Johnny Ace & Bart Gunn. Ace & Gunn win titles. **1/2

6/11 Tokyo Nippon Budokan: Jun Akiyama vs. Johnny Ace. Akiyama came out like a house of fire and the pace never slowed down. The fans bought Akiyama's near falls before the 2 minute mark because they were working so fast and the moves were his big ones. Akiyama looked really good and raised the level of Ace's work, but Ace still wasn't that impressive. Although this was a hot match, it was so short that there really wasn't anything to it. *1/2

All Japan Hour #84 Giant Baba Document & Memorial 8/21/99
-2 1/2hr. Q=TV Master

This show was basically broken up into three sections. In the first and third section, the five guys in the studio (who include Kobashi & Momota) discuss Baba's career. In the long middle section, they feature some of Baba's most famous matches. They only showed parts of seven different matches (between 4-12 minutes of each), so they don't really give you a feel of the path his career was taking. It was more like a recommended match list, except they leaned more toward notable events (ie Baba winning a major title) than great matchdes. The most noticable difference was in his athleticism, it seemed a lot worse in the matches after the Robinson match.

8/14/67 Osaka Kyujo Toksetsu (specially installed) Ring 2/3 Falls International Heavykyu Senshukenjiai: Giant Baba vs. Gene Kiniski. The one hour time limit expired during the deciding fall, so they went an extra 5 minutes, but it still wound up being a draw.

10/9/73 Tokyo Kuramae Kokugikan 2/3 Falls International Tag Senshuken Jiai: Dory Funk Jr. & Terry Funk vs. Giant Baba & Tomomi Tsuruta. Another hour draw.

12/21/74 Kagoshima-ken Taiikukan 2/3 Falls NWA Sekai Heavykyu Senshukenjiai: Jack Brisco vs. Giant Baba. Baba wins title.

7/24/76 Tokyo Kuramae Kokugikan 2/3 Falls PWF Heavykyu Senshuken Jiai: Giant Baba vs. Billy Robinson. Robinson was able to get some quality wrestling (for the time period) out of Baba.

10/31/79 Nagoya Aichi-ken Taiikukan NWA Sekai Heavykyu Senshuken Jiai: Giant Baba vs. Harley Race. Double juice. Baba wins the title.

2/4/82 Tokyo Taiikukan PWF Heavykyu Senshukenjiai: Giant Baba vs. Stan Hansen. This really lacked stiffness, particularly Baba's pitiful chops. They brawled on the floor for a count out. Hansen continued attacking Baba, taking out the undercarders that tried to stop him, until Baba finally knocked him to the floor with a boot to the head.

Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi vs. Stan Hansen & Giant Baba. The best match on the tape. Baba was really washed up by this point, but he wrestled seriously and Misawa & Kobashi took it to him (although you could see they were being really careful with him). Even in the edited down version, you could tell Hansen was really carrying the team. A strong heated contest. The fans went nuts when Kobashi moonsaulted Baba, but Misawa wound up scoring the major win, pinning Baba with a better (diving) version of Baba's famous neckbreaker drop.

Finally, they showed Baba's "retirement match" from the 5/2/99 Tokyo Dome show.

Naomichi Marufuji vs. Makoto Hashi. The first 10 minutes are really basic, but it gets pretty good after that with Marufuji doing his flying spots including a springboard plancha. *1/4

Masa Fuchi & Haruka Eigen & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi vs. Rusher Kimura & Mitsuo Momota & Takeshi Morishima. -*

Tamon Honda vs. Mike Burton. Honda found a way to be worse than even Burton. 1/4*

Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama & Kentaro Shiga vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa & Masahito Kakihara. This is one of those matches that should be **** because these guys certainly have that kind of talent if not more, but they just don't put the effort into the early portion. **1/2

AJ Hour #97 11/20/99 '99 Giant Series taped 10/22 Chiba Koen Taiikukan
-1hr 15min. Q=TV Master

Masao Inoue vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru. If Inoue would have been willing to put Kanemaru over then it might have been half decent because Kanemaru was trying. *1/2

Asia Tag Oza Ketteileaguesen: Masahito Kakihara & Daisuke Ikeda vs. Johnny Smith & Maunakea Mossman. This match got off to a slow start, but eventually turned into a good match. It wasn't as good as it sounds because they didn't try hard enough. ***

Jinsei Shinzaki vs. Stan Hansen. Shinzaki gave one of his best performances, doing a great job of getting around Hansen's inability to move. I still can't believe this was actually good. **1/2

Takao Omori & Yoshihiro Takayama & Satoru Asako vs. Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama & Kentaro Shiga. Akiyama was the best of the bunch. He even made Takayama look good. Kobashi didn't try too hard, but his teammates made up for that. ***1/4

-1hr 10min. Q=TV Master

Rusher Kimura & Mitsuo Momota & Makoto Hashi vs. Masa Fuchi & Haruka Eigen & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi. One of the best comedy matches of the year due to Hashi & Kikuchi. 1/4*

Takao Omori & Yoshihiro Takayama vs. Stan Hansen & Giant Kimala. Hansen & Kimala were beyond awful, as usual. 1/4*

Asia Tag Oza Ketteileague Yushoketteisen: Johnny Smith & Maunakea Mossman vs. Tamon Honda & Masao Inoue. Smith & Mossman did a pretty good job of carrying the match, but 26 minutes is just too long for Honda & Inoue to be out there. *3/4

AJ Hour #100 12/11/99 '99 Giant Series taped 10/25 Niigata Nagaoka Shi Kosei Kaikan
-1hr 15min. Q=TV Master

Naomichi Marufuji vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru. The match had good moves, but wasn't developed into anything beyond that. **

Gary Albright vs. Takeshi Morishima. *

Johnny Ace & Mike Barton vs. Akira Taue & Jun Izumida. The effort made up for some of their liabilities. Izumida used the Ace Crusher on Ace, so Ace kicked his ass. **

Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama & Kentaro Shiga & Jinsei Shinzaki vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa & Masahito Kakihara & Daisuke Ikeda. Fast-paced all action match. Stiff, crisp execution. This match had the intensity and the attitude. There's no good reason that we aren't seeing matches like this all the time. ***1/2

-2hr 25min. Q=TV Master

AJ Hour #101

Kentaro Shiga vs. Makoto Hashi. The spots were well done, but it was pretty basic. *1/2

Rusher Kimura & Mitsuo Momota & Satoru Asako vs. Masa Fuchi & Haruka Eigen & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi. Asako & Kikuchi didn't do anything to save this. -**

Vader vs. Takeshi Morishima. Vader actually sold a little for Morishima. Morishima even did a dive. It was pretty decent while it lasted, but that was only 4:08. *

'99 Sekai Saikyo Tag Ketteileagusen: Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama vs. Akira Taue & Stan Hansen. Slow-paced stiff match. Hansen looked really awful because he's so incredibly slow. Taue was alright. Kobashi & mainly Akiyama were the whole match. It had a lot of heat, but was nothing special until the end. **1/4

AJ Hour #102

Masahito Kakihara & Naomichi Marufuji vs. Maunakea Mossman & Yoshinobu Kanemaru. Kakihara stole the whole as usual. Mossman didn't do anything of note, but it was very good when Kanemaru was in with Kakihara. **3/4

Johnny Smith vs. Masao Inoue. They did a few good teases revolving around the Argentine backbreaker, but the match was short and what focus it had didn't really go anywhere. *1/2

Gary Albright & Wolf Hawkfield & Tamon Honda vs. Johnny Ace & Mike Barton & Jun Izumida. Several awful performance. The match was basically kick, punch, and headbutt. The big thing was a few near falls on Izumida. Ace gave Izumida an Ace crusher on the floor after the match because he was pissed that Izumida got pinned. 1/4*

'99 Sekai Saikyo Tag Ketteileagusen: Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa vs. Takao Omori & Yoshihiro Takayama. No Fear dominated Ogawa. Ogawa got a ton of support from the fans, but next to none from Misawa, who basically stood on the apron the whole match. The first 10 minutes was nothing special, but it got good after that. **3/4
